AI Search (GEO)

Getting recommended in Google AI Mode

Google AI Mode is Google's fully conversational search surface. For local queries it draws on Google Business Profile through Maps and on the organic index through query fan-out — one question becomes many background searches. A business appears when its profile is complete and its pages answer the specific sub-questions fan-out generates.

How is AI Mode different from AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is the generated summary above regular search results; Google AI Mode is a separate, fully conversational tab where the answer is the whole page. Both run on Gemini, but AI Mode behaves as a local-recommendation surface — for service queries it names businesses from the Maps candidate pool rather than only citing pages.

SOCi's 2026 index has Gemini recommending 11% of local businesses, while Google's own local pack covers more than three times as many. That gap is the working opportunity: the candidate pool for AI Mode's local answers is fed by the same profile data every local agency already optimises — but completeness standards are higher, and most profiles that are good enough for the map pack are not complete enough to be confidently recommended by a model that has to commit to a short list.

What is query fan-out and why does it change who gets cited?

Query fan-out is AI Mode's habit of turning one question into many background searches, then assembling a single answer from all of them. Citation stopped being a top-ten club: a page ranking nowhere near the front can be cited because it answers one generated sub-question precisely.

38%
of pages cited in AI Overviews also rank in the organic top ten, down from ~76% in July 2025 as fan-out intensified. Around 31% sit outside the top 100 entirely.Ahrefs, 863K keyword SERPs (March 2026)

Ask AI Mode for the best AC repair company in Clearwater FL and it quietly runs the sub-searches behind that question: emergency AC repair Clearwater, AC repair cost Pinellas County, licensed HVAC contractor Clearwater reviews, 24-hour AC repair near Countryside. A contractor whose site answers each of those on its own focused page gets multiple entry points into a single answer.

The practical read: ranking still helps — it remains the strongest single on-page predictor — but the returns have shifted toward coverage. A site whose pages each resolve one buyer question completely gives fan-out more entry points than one long page ever can. Sequential, question-form heading structure multiplies the citation odds on top of that; the measured multiple is on our content strategy page.

What should a local business do to show up in AI Mode?

Complete the Google Business Profile fully — categories, services, attributes, photos — because Maps is where AI Mode finds its local candidates. Then structure the site so each page answers the sub-questions fan-out generates, and build the off-site mentions that separate the named from the merely eligible.

  • Google Business Profile completed to catalogue depth, not map-pack minimum: every service listed, every attribute set, photos current.
  • One page per buyer question, opened with a self-contained 40–60 word answer a model can lift verbatim.
  • Comparison content — structured comparisons and honest lineups parse cleanly into generated answers.
  • Statistics with named sources in the copy — the single best-evidenced content edit in the literature, and the one with the largest measured lift.
  • Share of voice measured monthly across a fixed prompt panel that includes AI Mode, reported as a trend.

Common questions

Is my Google Business Profile enough to show up in AI Mode?
It is necessary and not sufficient. The profile puts a business in the candidate pool, but Gemini still recommends only a fraction of the businesses Google's own local pack covers. What separates the named from the eligible is site content that answers fan-out's sub-questions and off-site mentions that corroborate the business exists and is good.
Should I optimise for AI Mode or AI Overviews first?
They reward different work, so sequence by what you sell. AI Overviews is a content-citation surface: snippet eligibility, extractable passages, and content formats decide whether your page gets quoted. AI Mode is a local-recommendation surface: Google Business Profile completeness and the Maps candidate pool decide whether your business gets named. Same underlying model, different entry points — we measure them on separate lines.

Can you track a stable ranking in AI Mode?
No single-query ranking exists to track — the same prompt returns different answers at different times, and independent testing has concluded that per-query AI visibility tracking is inherently unreliable. What gets tracked instead is share of voice across a fixed panel of buyer prompts, run monthly and reported as a trend against named competitors.
