Link building for local businesses

Link building earns references to a business from other websites. Hitman Marketing sells less of it than most agencies, on evidence: branded web mentions correlate with AI visibility at 0.664 against 0.218 for backlinks, so budget goes to earned mentions, local citations, and roundup placements before link acquisition.

Do backlinks still matter for SEO and AI visibility?

For Google rankings, yes, with diminishing weight. For AI visibility they are among the weakest measured signals: in Ahrefs' study of AI Overview visibility across 75,000 brands, backlinks correlate at 0.218 against 0.664 for branded web mentions. Being talked about now beats being linked to.

Every coefficient in that table is Spearman, from one Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands measured against Google's AI Overviews — including the two that rarely get quoted, branded anchor text at 0.527 and Domain Rating at 0.326. Both sit above backlinks and below branded mentions, which is the whole argument in one line: what the wider web says about a business predicts AI visibility better than what points at it. Ahrefs' later cross-platform run, covering ChatGPT and AI Mode as well, put YouTube mentions highest of all at 0.737.

That is why link building here is sold as part of a wider earned-mention program rather than as a standalone quota. The budget goes where the measured return is, and for a local business that is mentions, roundup inclusions, and the local citations that confirm the entity.

What links are actually worth earning for a local business?

Local, real, and relevant ones — most of which cost membership or effort rather than a placement fee. The chamber directory, the county visitors bureau, genuine local press, and category roundups do more for a Clearwater business than any purchased package ever will.

  • Chamber membership: AMPLIFY Clearwater's member directory is an indexed subdomain and one of the cheapest high-authority local citations available, at $497 a year.
  • The Visit St. Pete–Clearwater partner listing — the official visitors bureau, and the highest-authority non-chamber local citation in Pinellas County.
  • Best-of and top-of roundups: lineup content supplies the majority of business-to-business AI citations, which makes inclusion in other people's lists worth more than most links from them.
  • Genuine local press, podcasts, and community coverage — earned, not distributed over a wire.
  • Industry directories and associations your customers already trust. For a Clearwater charter captain or marina, membership in the regional marine trade association and a listing on the visitors bureau's boating pages beat any general-purpose placement.

What link building should you refuse to pay for?

Purchased link packages, private blog networks, guest-post farms, and wire press releases. The first three violate Google's spam policies outright and put the whole domain at risk. The last is merely useless: in BuzzStream's four-million-citation study, wire-syndicated releases were 0.04% of citations.

A monthly link quota is the tell. Quotas get filled with whatever is cheapest to acquire that month, which is precisely the inventory Google's spam systems are trained on. What gets committed here instead is named placements and mentions, reported as they land — fewer, slower, and real.

Common questions

How many links per month will I get?
There is no monthly link number, deliberately. Quotas produce junk, because the only links that can be guaranteed on a schedule are the ones nobody should want. What is reported instead is named placements as they land: directory and roundup inclusions, chamber and association listings, local coverage, and the mention program's outreach and results.
Are citations the same as backlinks?
No. A citation is a listing of your name, address, and phone number in a directory, with or without a link. Its value is consistency — AI systems and Google both use agreement across listings to confirm a business is real and its facts are right. Citations also feed the data sources AI assistants read, which most backlinks never touch.
Why is this priced inside the top retainer tier?
Because earned mentions are a program, not a purchase. Targeting the domains your category actually gets cited from, producing something worth covering, and doing the outreach takes sustained effort — it is the most labour-intensive part of the search work. The lower tiers still include the citation and listings layer, which delivers most of the local value first.
