AI visibility tracking and reporting
AI visibility tracking measures how often assistants name your business across a fixed panel of buyer prompts. It is reported as share of voice over time, never as a rank for a single query — these systems are non-deterministic and single-query results are not stable.

Why can't you just track my ranking in ChatGPT?
A stable ChatGPT ranking does not exist to track. The same prompt produces different answers depending on timing, phrasing, personalisation, geography, and caching. Independent testing in 2026 concluded that AI brand-visibility tracking is inherently unreliable at the individual query level.
This is not a limitation of the tools — it is how the technology works. Aggregate hundreds of prompts and a real, stable signal emerges. Look at one and you are reading noise.
It is worth knowing that Semrush's 2026 AI Visibility Index found 45% of marketing leaders unable to measure their brand visibility in AI answers accurately, with only 9% holding tooling that covers every metric they need. Anyone presenting per-prompt rankings as fact is either mistaken or counting on you not knowing this.

What does AI visibility tracking actually measure?
AI visibility tracking measures four layers, three of them free: first-party citation counts, referral behaviour, crawler access, and share of voice. The paid layer is a share-of-voice tool running your prompt panel monthly across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, and Google AI Mode.
Bing's AI Performance report launched in February 2026 and is the first dashboard from a major engine showing real AI citation data. It is free, and it is dramatically underused.
| Layer | Source | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| First-party citations | Bing Webmaster Tools AI Performance | Actual citation counts, cited pages, grounding queries |
| Referral behaviour | GA4 AI Assistant channel + custom channel group | Sessions and conversions from AI assistants |
| Crawler access | Server logs | Whether AI bots can reach the site at all — a leading indicator |
| Share of voice | Monthly prompt panel across 5 assistants | How often you are named versus named competitors |

Why do the traffic numbers look so low?
AI referral traffic is structurally under-counted. A large share of AI referral sessions arrive with no referrer header and are recorded as Direct traffic regardless of how analytics is configured, and GA4's native AI channel does not recognise Perplexity at all. Treat every AI number in a dashboard as a floor.
How large a share is not settled. The published attempts to measure it come from attribution vendors reading their own customers' logs, so Hitman Marketing quotes no percentage here — the honest statement is that the undercount is real, one-directional, and not currently pinned down by anyone independent.
The offsetting fact matters more: AI referral traffic converts at 4.4× to 23× organic rates. Ahrefs' own numbers show AI assistants delivering about 0.5% of visitors and 12.1% of signups. Judge this channel on conversion, not volume.
Common questions
- What does the monthly report actually contain?
- One page. Share of voice by assistant across your prompt panel with the trend line, citation counts from Bing Webmaster Tools, listing health across Foursquare, Apple, Bing and Google, and AI referral sessions and conversions from GA4 — with the under-counting caveat stated each time.
- How many prompts are in a panel?
- Thirty to sixty for a local service business, split between direct hire-intent prompts and the research prompts your buyers ask on the way there. For a roofer that means "best roofing company in Clearwater for storm damage" alongside "how long does an insurance roof claim take in Florida"; for an HVAC company, "AC repair near me open now" alongside "why is my AC freezing up"; for a marine business, "best boat detailing in St. Petersburg". Panels are chosen with you, kept stable so the trend means something, and reviewed quarterly.
